How to Be Assertive Without Being Aggressive

Whether you are a manager, a CEO or an office junior, you are going to have your own opinions that matter to you. If you want to push these opinions through and make sure people understand why they matter, then assertiveness is the key. This will make people listen to you and take your ideas more seriously.

However, there is a fine line between assertiveness and aggressiveness. Here is how to be assertive, not aggressive:

  1. Be calm. Never be tempted to raise your voice or be drawn into an argument – always remain calm.
  2. Sort your thoughts first. Make sure you know what you are going to say and the message you want to convey. Have this clear in your own head first.
  3. Explain your reasons. All good points are backed up by solid reasoning, so make sure you explain this clearly.
  4. Remain professional. Talk in a professional environment and direct the conversation in an appropriate manner.
